It was a record-setting day that included more than 12 inches of snow and multiple school and business closures.

On Thursday morning, North Texans expecting a normal work and school day were met with an unusual sight: powdery white snow blanketed neighborhoods across the area. According to the National Weather Service, the official totals for the snowfall were 12.5 inches at DFW, 12 inches in Denton, 12.6 inches in north Fort Worth and 14.4 inches in far northern Tarrant County.

“Our records date back to 1898, and in all that time, North Texas has never seen that much snowfall in a single day,” said Daniel Huckaby, spokesman for NWS. “The previous record was 12.1 inches in January of 1964.”

According to Huckaby, the snowstorm that hit North Texas is a different storm from the one that hit Washington, D.C., and other northeastern states. He said the North Texas storm had a more southerly track, which is a rarity to see. The storm tracked across east Texas and Louisiana, and on Friday it made its way into southern Mississippi and Alabama.

While the winter of 2009 hasn’t been one of the coldest winters, it’s among the coldest and may end up in the top 10 coldest winters, depending on February. It is also the second-snowiest winter on record. The high temperature on Thursday was 38 degrees when snow started to fall, and the low temperature was 32 degrees. However, temperatures on Saturday morning are expected to be in the upper 20s, which means the snow patches will be around for a while.
